The death of a man on Matakana Island, near Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, is being investigated by police as a homicide, authorities revealed this evening. They are urging anyone who was present at a temporary camping ground on the island on New Year's Eve to contact investigators.

In a statement earlier today, police said they are "currently investigating" the death of the 22-year-old man. Yesterday,  police described the fatality as a "sudden death".

But with the completion of a post mortem, the case has now been "upgraded to homicide", police say.

Officers declined to release the cause of death. The victim's name is also still under wraps as police work to advise his family.

Police urge anyone with information that may assist this investigation to call Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
