Controversial Bill that would make it easier for people to change gender on birth certificate put on hold

February 25, 2019

NZ First MP Tracey Martin says the move to self-identification was proposed without proper public consultation.

A controversial bill that would make it far easier for people to change the gender on their birth certificate, has now been put on hold.

A parliamentary committee had proposed changing the law, so those seeking to change gender, could do so without having to provide a family court declaration and medical evidence.

However, the minister in charge NZ First MP Tracy Martin says while she supports making it easier to self-identify the change was proposed without proper public consultation.

Ms Martin will be interviewed about the bill on Q + A at 9:25pm tonight.
