Tonga's freedom fighter turned Prime Minister has been laid to rest in an emotional ceremony.

Crowds young and old lined Nuku'alofa's streets to farewell Akilisi Pohiva who died last week.

Inside the packed centenary church, Queen Nanasipau'u sat in the royal box, as she is related to the late prime minister - ironically, a man
who dedicated his life to stripping the monarchy of political power.

His coffin was carried to his final resting place at  Nuku'alofa's Telekava Cemetery with the head of the New Zealand delegation, minister Jenny Salesa, walking with the family.
