A suspected gunman has been shot dead after opening fire at a Chicago hospital, police say.

Four others are in critical condition after being shot at Mercy Hospital at around 3.30pm local time, CBS Chicago reports.

A police officer and at least one hospital employee are among the four in critical condition following the incident.

In a tweet, Chicago Police Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi said, "A #ChicagoPolice officer has been shot in the active shooter incident at Mercy Hospital. He is in critical condition but receiving excellent care".

It is currently unknown if the suspected gunman was killed by officers or took his own life.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson are monitoring the situation, a spokesperson for the mayor said.
