Small town Texas police chief hailed a hero after bodycam footage shows him saving baby's life

A small Texas town's school district police department is receiving international praise this week after bodycam footage captured the agency's chief saving the life of a baby by using CPR.

Rex Evans, who heads the Splendora Independent School District Police Department in a town of about 1600 on the northern outskirts of Houston, was driving between schools Saturday when a frantic mum flagged him down and pleaded for help.

"My baby's not breathing!" she could be heard saying on the video as Mr Evans approached.

The child was discoloured and her eyes were rolled back into her head, so Mr Evans immediately went to work performing CPR, he told local broadcaster KPRC-TV.

"When I saw the panic on everybody's face in the vehicle, I knew there was something very serious," he told the Houston Chronicle. "Something was seriously wrong."

On the video, Mr Evans can also be heard pleading: "Come on, baby."

After about 30 seconds of CPR, the child was revived. Paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital, where she was listed in good condition.

"It was such a relief to hear that baby cry," Mr Evens told the Chronicle. "...It hits you right in the heart."

In a post on the police department's Facebook page hours after the incident, officers came away with a life lesson to share with followers.

"Never think a day is just another day. Some days, the opportunity presents itself to literally change the world and your life, in the same moment," the post read. "Thank you so much for your comments and support. It's has been a very humbling few hours."
