Residents of alleged gunman's NSW hometown holds vigil for Christchurch terror attack victims

March 19, 2019

Residents of the town in New South Wales, Australia where the man allegedly behind the Christchurch terror attacks grew up have come together for a vigil honouring the victims.

Grafton locals gathered in Christ Church Cathedral last night as they paid their respects to the 50 people killed during Friday's attack on two mosques in Christchurch.

The 28-year-old alleged gunman, Brenton Tarrant, had worked in Grafton as a gym trainer until 2011.

The vigil was held to "extend our compassion for the citizens of Christchurch, New Zealand and especially for the Muslim community that has suffered so directly," Christ Church Cathedral Dean Dr Gregory Jenks told SBS News.

The Dean, an Anglican priest, delivered a verse from the Quran, as well as a message from the Islamic Council of NSW, as part of the vigil.
