April 4, 2018

A private school counsellor in the US has been arrested and lost her job after admitting she had sex with one her students.

Kenleigh Prendergast, 25, was fired from her job at Spartanburg County Day School in South Carolina after reportedly confessing her "inappropriate relationship" to local police.

She told officers she would text, call or Facetime the victim during the school day and after hours. She said that this contact then led to meeting at her home and private counselling practice, WSPA reports .

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says an allegation was made earlier last week against Ms Prendergast who was interviewed on Friday, admitting the claims made against her.

The 25-year-old was then arrested and charged with sexual battery on a student aged 16 or 17 years, with no aggravated force or coercion.

An investigation found that the relationship began in January of this year and ended only days before the report was first made to police.

The private school released a statement which reads in part: "Spartanburg Day School was contacted on March 31 by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and informed that an employee, Kenleigh Prendergast, was charged with sexual battery with a student.

"Ms Prendergast was hired in August of 2017 as school counsellor.

"Effective immediately, Ms Prendergast's employment with the school has been terminated.
