What the? Plus-sized Miss Italy contestant told she's 'too fat' to be a beauty queen

September 18, 2016

A fashion model has launched a body shaming assault on a contestant who came in second at a Miss Italy beauty pageant, saying she's "too fat" to be a beauty queen.

The assault was launched by 40-year-old Croatian model Nina Moric on her Instagram account claiming plus-sized model Paola Torrente was only chosen because of political correctness.

Size 14 Miss Torrente is a 22-year-old engineering student and wowed the audience with her figure.

But even though the Italian beauty was a very popular choice with the audience and judges, Miss Moric continued to complain.

"You have created organisations to defend people with too much flesh," she wrote on social media.

"You have arrived to the point where we chose a Miss Italy who is too fat - and all in the name of sensitivity and acceptance of others."

The mother of the contestant who came third also voiced her criticism saying anybody with a size 14 should take part in the plus size Miss Italy contest.

But the judges said they hope the results push the boundaries of what is regarded as the traditional idea of beauty.

The organiser of the contest Patrizia Mirigliani said the popularity of curvaceous women was a social initiative to combat anorexia and to win this fight it was important to have the support of the fashion industry.

"Stop the stereotypes. What we want is more female models who are closer to real people," she told the Daily Mail.

Following the outbreak, the curvaceous model had thousands of comments of support on social media from people around the world describing her as a "masterpiece of nature".

In an interview Miss Paola said that despite being the runner-up she feels like a winner.
