The summer of 2018 has been the hottest ever recorded in England and the joint hottest across the UK.

A heatwave saw temperatures rise across large swathes of the UK during June and July - narrowly beating those of 1976, the BBC reports.

The hottest day of the year so far was recorded on July 26, where temperatures rose to 35.3 degrees in Faversham, Kent.

The Met Office said summer 2018's heatwave saw an average temperature of 15.8 degrees - tying with 1976, 2003 and 2006 since records began in 1910.

A Met Office spokesperson told the BBC, "The temperature has risen, since industrial times, by one degree overall, so we're starting from a degree higher. So the peaks in these heatwaves are going to be a little bit higher as well."

In England, the mean temperature was at 17.2 degrees - slightly higher than the 1976 record of 17 degrees.

Wales was close behind with an average of 16 degrees - 0.1 degrees under 1995's record high.

The UK's sweltering heat could lead to more above-average temperatures in Autumn, the Met Office said.
