'We're driven for success' - New Blues co-captain Blake Gibson optimistic about 2019 season

December 18, 2018

The 23-year-old says Leon MacDonald stepping into the head coaching role has been a smooth transition.

New Blues co-captain Blake Gibson says the changes in coaching roles has been "seamless" at the Auckland rugby franchise and that his side are getting on with their job preparing for the 2019 Super Rugby season.

Tana Umaga stepped down to an assistant coaching role for the Blues role last month with Leon MacDonald called in to take over as head coach.

Gibson told media today in Auckland that the Blues players and coaches are tracking along well in training.

"It's been pretty seamless, they've really taken control of their areas so for us we just need to make sure that we are nailing what they are telling us to do and seems like we are doing that at the moment," said Gibson.

The 23-year-old flanker said Auckland’s 40-33 win over Canterbury to claim the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership final in October is a huge confidence boost for the Blues.

"So we've got the players and we've got the coaches and we're driven for success, we're just going to work hard.

"We've got plenty of good players here, Auckland won the comp here and Harbour and Northland have been doing well in their comp."

The Blues finished last in the New Zealand Super Rugby conference and second to last in the overall competition standings in 2018.
