Spain stun All Blacks Sevens as underdogs topple giants in Vancouver

March 10, 2019

Spain have stunned New Zealand at the Vancouver Sevens, securing a first ever victory over the All Blacks Sevens 26-24 in their second pool match this morning.

Coming into their second match of the weekend after a 45-7 demolition over France first up, the All Blacks Sevens struck first against Spain with Joe Ravouvou evading the Spanish defence, running 50 metres to open the scoring after three minutes.

Andrew Knewstubb then doubled New Zealand's lead just a minute later, showing incredible pace from the back of a scrum to score under the posts.

However, Spain showed some fight before the break, making the most of possession camped on the New Zealand line before Ignacio Rodriguez-Guerra scored out wide.

A deliberate knock-on earned a yellow card for Sam Dickson, before Francisco Hernandez made the most of his side's numerical advantage to score a try, the successful conversion giving Spain a 14-12 lead at halftime.

A flowing team then saw Spain be the first to strike after the break with Joan Losada scoring his side's third try of the game, with another conversion putting New Zealand behind 21-12.

Ravouvou scored his try second by fending off an attempted tackle before a dash down the left to go over, Knewstubb converting to bring scores back to 21-19 in favour of Spain.

Dickson scored for New Zealand in the dying minutes, crossing over in the corner after some clever work from Vilimoni Koroi and and Tone Ng Shiu.

With the match all but sealed in New Zealand's favour, Spain needed to score with the final play of the match for victory. They did with a miraculous offload finding the arms of Pol Pla who raced away to score and give the European minnows one of their all-time great victories.
