Sam Cane returns to contact training for Chiefs after neck break

April 9, 2019

Coach Colin Cooper says co-captain Cane has been "cleared for contact sessions."

Chiefs co-captain Sam Cane has been given the green light to return to contact training, after suffering a broken neck against South Africa in Pretoria last year.

The 27-year-old sustained a fractured vertebrae in his neck last October playing for the All Blacks.

Chiefs coach Colin Cooper confirmed today that Cane is "cleared for contact sessions," as advised by the medical team.

"He had a little bit of contact yesterday and we'll manage him through some contact in the next two weeks and take it from there," said Cooper.

"It's exciting for him and he's excited to be back.

"It's been a tough journey for him but, as the co-captain, he's been playing a key part and making sure there's accountability and some honesty among us coaches and the players."

Cooper said he is not sure when Cane will be back in action for the Chiefs, but says they will go through the right protocols to get him back slowly to the rugby field.

The Chiefs host the Blues on Saturday at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.
