NZ Rugby Players Association support Brad Weber's criticism of Israel Folau's anti-gay remarks

April 18, 2018

"People who engage with rugby in whatever manner deserve to be treated with respect and dignity," said NZRPA's CEO Rob Nichol.

New Zealand Rugby Player Association’s CEO Rob Nichol has come out in support of Chiefs halfback Brad Weber, who has criticised Wallabies’ star Israel Folau for his controversial anti-gay remarks.

Folau last month commented on an Instagram post saying that God's plan for gay people was "Hell, unless they repent of their sins and turn to God," with the cross-code star copping major backlash.

Weber, 27, was the first Super Rugby player to respond to Folau’s comments saying he’s disgusted by his remarks.

"I can't stand that I have to play this game that I love with people, like Folau, who say what he's saying," Weber posted.

"My cousin and her partner, and my Aunty and her partner are some of the most kind, caring and loving people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

"To think that I play against someone that says they'll go to Hell for being gay disgusts me."

NZRPA's CEO Nichol fully backed Weber on his stance about the matter.

"People who engage with rugby in whatever manner deserve to be treated with dignity and respect," said Nichol.

"And what you've seen with Brad is he wants to make it clear that that's how he feels, and indeed from a players' association and player base that's how we all feel."
