The Hurricanes had a real chance after a turnover by Ardie Savea at the breakdown, but Jordie Barrett throws a poor pass to his teammate Chase Tiatia. Probably would have been better off had Jordie kicked it down field. The Highlanders have a scrum just outside the Hurricanes' 22.

TRY! A sweetly timed set-move play from the Hurricanes backs off a lineout and it is Ben Lam who goes over to score a crucial try down the left hand edge. The Canes square it up at 22-22.

HALFTIME - HURRICANES 14 HIGHLANDERS 8

The Hurricanes fire a major blow against the Highlanders before the break with Ngani Laumape dotting down to score his second try of the match. In the first spell the Highlanders forwards have been all over the Hurricanes pack.

The home team have been guilty of poor discipline at the break down and the Highlanders' line speed has been creating issues for the Canes.

But you sense the Canes are starting to find some momentum on attack.

39 mins: HURRICANES 14 HIGHLANDERS 8

TRY! Beauden Barrett regathers a exit kick from the Highlanders, he looks up and sees acres of space out wide. He kicks the ball out wide for Ngani Laumape who regathers the ball. He has only one man to beat, Laumape steps past Highlanders' Josh Ioane and goes in to score his second try of the match.

Beauden Barrett nails his conversion attempt from out wide.

35 mins: HURRICANES 7 HIGHLANDERS 8

KNOCK-ON!  Highlanders winger Tevita Li drops an intercept attempt, had he held onto the ball you would have backed him to go all the way for a try. The Hurricanes are let off the hook and have a scrum 35m out of the Highlanders' goal line.

31 mins: HURRICANES 7 HIGHLANDERS 8

THREE! The Hurricanes are penalised for playing the ball on the ground and Highlanders' Josh Ioane nails his penalty kick attempt from right in front of the sticks. The Highlanders retake the lead and are back in front 8-7.

27 mins: HURRICANES 7 HIGHLANDERS 5

TRY! TJ Perenara throws a spectacular delayed pass to lock Liam Mitchell who makes a massive break up field. He steps off his left foot before passing the ball to Ngani Laumape who goes crashing over to score the Hurricanes' first try of the match.

SCRUM! Hurricanes' flanker Du'Plessis runs in too high into contact and the Highlanders forwards hold him up at halfway. The ref blows his whistle and rules a scrum to the visitors.

The Hurricanes are struggling to deal with the Highlanders defensive line speed at the moment and their counter rucking at breakdown time.

10 mins: HURRICANES 0 HIGHLANDERS 5

TRY! The Highlanders strike through their halfback Aaron Smith, he makse a smart tackle on Hurricanes' No.8 Ardie Savea who tries to run it out 5m from his own goal-line. The Highlanders forwards drive over and get a crucial turnover. Smith regathers the ball and grounds the ball on the try-line.

The conversion attempt from Josh Ioane is offline from the sideline.

7 mins: HURRICANES 0 HIGHLANDERS 0

A scrappy start from both teams, there has already been over three scrums to start this match. Both sides guilty of trying to do much with the ball when nothing is on.

KICK-OFF!  Beauden Barrett gets things started with a deep kick towards the Highlanders. Thomas Umaga-Jensen tries to regather the ball but he has fumbled it and Canes have an attacking scrum just inside the Highlanders' 22.

PRE-MATCH:

The Hurricanes are coming off a 43-13 win over the Brumbies last Friday. The Highlanders however are looking to bounce back after a 24-19 loss to the Melbourne Rebels last weekend.

Chase Tiatia holds onto the fullback position for the Hurricanes after his impressive debut last week in Palmerston North which means Jordie Barrett has been moved to the wing.

Rookie flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi cements his spot at openside flanker with Ardie Savea retaining the No.8 jersey for the Canes.

The Highlanders welcome back All Blacks stars including fullback Ben Smith, halfback Aaron Smith and loose forward Luke Whitelock.

Last time the Hurricanes and Highlanders met in June last year, the Canes went down 30-14 at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
