Crusaders mastermind Scott Robertson uses surfing to 'clear my head and make big decisions'

February 13, 2019

Robertson uses the pastime as a way to get the creative mind going.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has plenty to think about heading into this Super Rugby season.

Firstly, there's the chance to coach the team to a third consecutive title in his third year at the helm.

There's also the issue of balancing talent with the All Blacks' World Cup preparations and how he's going to take down new-look sides such as the Ma'a Nonu-boosted Blues.

But the strategist has a go-to spot and activity to help him make those decisions and others - surfing at Sumner Beach.

Robertson told 1 NEWS the surf is where he does some of his best thinking.

"A few decisions are made out there," Robertson said.

"It gets the creative mind going."

Robertson said Sumner Beach in particular is a "great beach" to relax at with some decent surf to help him focus on the bigger issues.

"This is where I clear my head and make some big decisions.

"It's pretty special to come down here as much as I can on a nice night."

Robertson will hope some of those big decisions will get him off to a winning start this season on Saturday night when the Crusaders take on the Blues at Eden Park to begin their title defence.
