Black Ferns Sevens overpower hosts Australia to claim Sydney Sevens title

February 3, 2019

New Zealand have powered to victory in the final of the Sydney Sevens, earning a 34-10 win against hosts Australia at Spotless Stadium.

After victory in the Fast Four competition in Hamilton last weekend, the Black Ferns Sevens entered the final against their hosts in hot form.

Meanwhile Australia could only advance from their pool due to superior points differential over USA and Spain, earning their spot in the final thanks to wins over France and Ireland.

Stacey Waaka got the ball rolling for New Zealand, showing off her pace out wide to run in the first try of the final. Waaka then saved a try at the other end, bundling Evania Pelite over the sideline and into touch.

Australia would then manage to get themselves on the scoreboard, with Emma Sykes crossing over late in the first half.

The hosts were then reduced to six, with Sharni Williams taking out another player's legs.

Shakira Baker and Michaela Blyde made the most of New Zealand's advantage, both grabbing late first half tries to inflate the score out to 17-5 at the break.

Blyde would have her second after the break, making a lethal burst from the centre of the field, before the conversion made the score 24-5 in the Kiwis' favour.

Australia weren't to go down without a fight in front of their home crowd though - Sykes soon made a second to give her side hope of a late fightback.

Waaka's second try of the evening would end any Australian hopes though, scoring before Blyde had her hat-trick, sealing New Zealand's third straight title for the current season.

The result sees New Zealand remain top of the World Sevens Series standings, with tournament wins in both Glendale and Dubai gifting the Black Ferns Sevens a perfect start to the 2018/19 campaign.
