WBC sanction immediate rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder after controversial title fight draw

December 10, 2018

Negotiations are underway for a world heavyweight championship rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury after their dramatic draw in Los Angeles a week ago.

The WBC, the organisation that Wilder's world heavyweight championship is tied to, has sanctioned for a direct rematch between the pair, over-riding the mandatory challenge rights Dominic Breazeale has to Wilder's belt.

Fury's promoter Frank Warren is already getting to work setting up the fight but says it probably won't happen until late next year.

"We will start talks this week," he told The Telegraph.

"Tyson Fury has been in camp for virtually a year so we need to give him a break for Christmas. We are pushing hard to have the rematch in the UK. We will look to do the fight sometime in the late spring 2019 and are looking at a stadium if it happens in the UK.

"If we can't get it here, it may well go to Las Vegas. But we believe Fury is now in the driving seat. He is the No 1 heavyweight in the world. I said whoever won the fight would be the No 1 and in my eyes and those of numerous astute judges, we believe Fury did win the fight."

Warren added should Fury win the rematch against Wilder, he would then target a unification bout with fellow British boxer and IBO, WBA and WBO champion, Anthony Joshua.

"That's a huge fight as well. Tyson will be coming for Joshua, and he will have nowhere to hide," Warren said.

But if Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn gets it his way, Fury won't even be in the picture.

Hearn told Sky Sports UK he plans to approach Wilder's camp himself to set up a unification bout between the two.

"I think the wording was everything in that one, sanctioned not ordered," Hearn said, regarding the WBC's call.

"I think what they're saying is they would approve the rematch. Dominic Breazeale is the mandatory, who is supposed to fight the winner, so what they're saying is that they would allow the rematch.

"As far as I see, they haven't ordered it. We'll see. I don't think it really changes much. If Wilder wants to fight Fury, he'll fight Fury.

"If he wants to be undisputed, he'll fight Joshua. It [unification] can trump anything. I don't know how much that means to Wilder. It means everything to us, means everything to Joshua, but the rematch is a big fight."
