'I felt quite comfortable' – Mahe Drysdale thrilled with progress under Dick Tonks

December 3, 2018

The Olympic champion took out yesterday's Billy Webb Challenge in Whanganui.

Kiwi rowing legend Mahe Drysdale says he's thrilled with the progress he's made in the wake of winning yesterday's Billy Webb challenge, taking out the title for a fifth time in Wanganui yesterday.

Having returned from Canada where he's been training with former coach Dick Tonks , Drysdale defeated John Storey to claim the crown at the Billy Webb challenge - a single skulls event.

Drysdale says that he feels as good as he did during his last Olympic campaign.

"I went to Canada to work with Dick Tonks and the big reason for that was because he knows me so well," he began.

"From that, I just got some things that I wasn't doing as well as I possibly could. I've worked pretty hard on those for the three weeks in Canada and had some really positive signs.

"I haven't done any racing work at all but I felt really comfortable at that rate.

"That gives me a lot of confidence that I'm doing the right thing. There's still a lot of work ahead - this is by no means the end - I've got to get fast at two kilometres, that's what counts.

"I'm feeling really good in myself, and really positive at this time of year to be going how I am."

Drysdale was forced to switch from the men's single sculls to the men's quad after losing his spot as New Zealand's first-choice single sculler to Robbie Manson earlier this year.
