'I can really help the team out' – Auckland Tuatara's first American import arrives in NZ

October 31, 2018

Pitcher Brandon Marklund flew in to meet his new teammates.

With the new Australian Baseball League season approaching ever increasingly, the Auckland Tuatara have been bolstered by the arrival of their first overseas player, pitcher Brandon Marklund.

Just out of college, Marklund is a welcome addition to the Tuatara roster, with their inaugural pre-season to kick off in less than a fortnight.

The pitcher flew into New Zealand today, meeting his coach Steve Mintz for the very first time.

Speaking to 1 NEWS, Marklund spoke about beginning his professional career with the Tuatara.

"It means the world to me to have this opportunity," he began.

"I know a lot of guys that get done with high school and college that don't get this opportunity.

"I'm just grateful to make this the first step, and the next of many."

Asked to describe himself, Marklund replied:

"I'm a short guy - around 6'1" - I throw the ball hard.

"I like to compete in the zone, work to my strengths, not be intimidated by the other hitters.

"I'm a reliever, started closing this past year, really found a niche there.

"I think I can really help the team out with my skillset."

The Tuatara begin their pre-season against Brisbane on November 9.
