Auckland to possibly stage new global motor racing series Formula E in 2018

The newest global motor racing series is starting to catch on and could be heading to New Zealand in 2018.

Formula E (electric racing) and local promoters are eyeing up a round of the circuit in New Zealand as early as this time next year.

Kiwi driver Mitch Evans is the first New Zealander to make the shift into the world of electrics.

"Staggering really, I didn't expect myself to be in this position to be honest," said Evans.

He has just started his second season in the Formula E with Jaguar, a first podium finish coming in Hong Kong earlier this month.

The all electric series has backing from some of the world's biggest automotive companies with Porsche, Mercedes and BMW due to enter soon.

1 NEWS understands a group of local sports promoters are in talks to a hold a round on the Auckland waterfront street circuit, possibly starting in December next year.

"With the lack of noise and omissions there's no reason why any city can't host a race," said Evans.

"To have a mainstream championship, world championship like Formula E in Auckland would be incredible."
