'We certainly know that the level goes up again' - Tongan coach on RLWC semi-final with England

November 21, 2017

Lebanon gave Mate Ma'a Tonga a huge scare as the Pacific nation only just managed to scrape through with a 24-22 win in Christchurch.

The mastermind behind Tonga's Rugby League World Cup success coach Kristian Woolf said his players will need to find another gear when they face England this Saturday in Auckland to secure a spot in the next week's final.

Lebanon gave Mate Ma'a Tonga an almighty scare last Saturday when they almost created an upset, but Tonga managed to edge their rivals 24-22 in Christchurch.

Woolf said his side is prepared for their big RLWC semi-final clash with England this weekend.

"I don't think we will have any dramas this week," said Woolf.

"We'll certainly have a freshening up week this week and give ourselves every chance to be at our best."

The Tongan coach believes his players will not get overawed by the occasion.

"Obviously it is a massive occasion, that's not lost on our players - now we certainly know that the level goes up again this week."

Woolf said the support from fans throughout the tournament has been unreal.

Mate Ma'a Tonga mingled with fans this afternoon as they prepare for their RLWC semi-final against England.

"We really appreciate it and we really understand who we are playing for," he said.

"It's just really good to be a part of something that has made so many people so proud.

"That's been the best thing when you do see these supporters, just how happy and proud they are of our blokes - it is really special to be a part of."

Tonga's RLWC semi-final kicks off at 6pm (NZ time) at Mount Smart in Auckland.
