Watch: 'It's not up to me' - Kiwis coach still hurting after Jason Taumalolo's snub of NZ

October 22, 2017

David Kidwell said he is not sure whether the Kiwis will be open to take Taumalolo back after he chose to play for Tonga at this year's World Cup.

New Zealand Kiwis coach David Kidwell looks to be still hurting after the decision by NRL star Jason Taumalolo to walk away from New Zealand earlier this month, opting to play for Tonga at this year's Rugby League World Cup.

Kidwell appeared to be uncomfortable when asked by a reporter at today's World Cup launch in Brisbane whether he would welcome back Taumalolo with open arms if he were to decide to play for New Zealand in the future.

"The space we are in right now, it's not up to me," said Kidwell.

Taumalolo announced at the beginning of this month his allegiance to Tonga, with other Kiwis players following suit like Manu Ma'u, David Fusitu'a and Sio Taukeiaho all choosing to play for Tonga over New Zealand.

New Zealand play their first match of the tournament against Toa Samoa in Auckland on October 28 next Saturday.

The Kiwis will meet Tonga on November 11 in Hamilton.
