Former Kiwis utility Tony Kemp has said that coach David Kidwell was never the right man to lead New Zealand, following their elimination from the Rugby League World Cup at the hands of Fiji last week.
Since taking over from Stephen Kearney, Kidwell's reign as Kiwis coach has been nothing short of a disaster, winning just two games from nine, as well as becoming the first New Zealand side to exit a World Cup at the quarter-final stage.
Kemp however, says that it's not entirely Kidwell's fault - saying that he was always going to fall short as coach.
"The support that was put around him (Kidwell), and the process appointing those people was totally wrong," he told TVNZ 1's Te Karere.
"It lacked consideration around what was needed to make David successful.
Kemp also spoke about a flaw in the make up of Kidwell's support staff.
"You've put Brian Smith in there as assistant coach, he's won nothing but a wooden spoon."
"You've put Sean Richardson in there to manage a Kiwi culture - who's an Australian."
"It just wasn't right."
