Stacey Jones says situation around Ben Barba's axing from Indigenous All Stars over assault allegation is 'disappointing'

February 7, 2019

Jones is the coach of the Māori All Stars and his team will face their Australian counterparts in Melbourne on February 15.

Māori All Stars coach and Warriors assistant Stacey Jones says Ben Barba's axing from the NRL is a good wake up call for players to be a "good person on and off the field".

Barba was sacked by the North Queensland Cowboys over domestic violence allegations last weekend.

The 2012 Dally M medal winner allegedly assaulted his partner at a Townsville casino on Australia Day.

The 29-year-old was named to play in the Indigenous and Māori All Stars fixture in Melbourne next Friday, but has since been given a lifetime ban by the NRL.

"We're all disappointed when these things happen in our game and we'll let the people above take of it," said Jones in Auckland today.

"So yeah it is disappointing, I haven't really focused too much on that actually.

"It is a reminder to everyone involved in the game – you are a good person on and off the field."

Jones believes education is key in rubbing out poor off field behaviour by players.

"The more education we can get into the game and into the players and everyone involved – the better it will be," Jones said.

"I think we [Warriors] have got good leadership at the top, you know we are always reminding.

"I know our head coach is always when these things pop up, reminding players of who they are and what the consequences could be."

Four Warriors are included in Jones' Māori All Star team; Adam Blair, Gerard Beale, Tohu Harris and Pita Hiku.
