'Everyone's crying' – Tonga stars react to history-making victory over Kangaroos

November 4, 2019

Andrew Fifita and Konrad Hurrell spoke to Tagata Pasifika after Saturday's win.

Tonga's victory over Australia on Saturday was celebrated by players and fans alike, following the island nation's historic 16-12 win over the world champions at Eden Park.

As the two sides met in a Test match for just the second time in history, Tonga - playing under the moniker of 'Tonga Invitational XIII' due to an ongoing dispute - stunned the world champions for one of the biggest results in the nation's sporting history.

TVNZ1 programme Tagata Pasifika was invited into the Tongan team's sheds after the match, as some of rugby league's biggest names came to terms with the win.

"Everyone's crying, after the game everyone was crying," prop Andrew Fifita said.

Having switched allegiance from Australia to Tonga in 2017, Fifita has always cited his family's heritage for his decision to play for the Pacific side.

"I know my grandparents are looking down on me, and they'll be that proud. I remember just before the [2017] World Cup, telling me -  he was in tears - what we could do for Tonga.

"Nothing can beat this emotion right now."

Tonga and ex-Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell was another to attempt to put the victory into words.

"We don't have much, but we have so much love," he said.

"I guess that's what our people have, and that's why we're grateful. That's what we played for, our family, our little country.

"The love that our people give us is unforgettable, and that's why we're here. Every person in there dug deep, and try [to] go for the win, just for them."

The win means Tonga have now taken victories over the three 'Tier One' nations, defeating New Zealand, England and Australia since the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
