White Ferns coach admits struggling side were 'fearful' in India defeats

February 5, 2019

Off the back of an ODI series loss to India, the New Zealand Women have a point to prove in the T20 series.

The White Ferns are looking to play attacking cricket in their three match T20 series against India, having admitted to playing within themselves in the recently completed ODIs.

Having crashed to a nine wicket loss in Napier, and an eight wicket defeat in Mount Maunganui, the White Ferns surrendered the ODI series to India with one match still to play, before turning the tables with an eight wicket victory in the dead-rubber finale in Hamilton.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today though, coach Haidee Tiffen said that her side could go out and play positively during the upcoming matches, having failed to do so so far against India.

"In the first couple of games we probably played within ourselves, probably a little bit fearful if I'm honest," she said.

"When you're playing international cricket, you've really got to step up and take it to the opposition. That's what we're asking the players to do in this T20 series.

"We're really wanting to make ensure [that] we're playing a good brand of cricket, and players are in the mindset to go out and play that fearless cricket, which is what we want them to do."

Tiffen also said that success in the final ODI gives her side the belief needed to turn things around in the T20 series.

"Even though our squad had changed, we're really confident after that win.

"In those first two games, we had the plans in place, we just didn't execute them. To see that come off in the third ODI is brilliant, that will see us take a bit of momentum into the T20 series."
