'They were just outclassed' – Guy Heveldt's bleak assessment of the Black Caps' World Cup

July 4, 2019

A third straight loss sees NZ's fate out of their hands.

The Black Caps are heading into a probable Cricket World Cup semi-final with their tails between their legs, according to 1 NEWS Sport reporter Guy Heveldt.

Following this morning's 119-run defeat to England in Durham, New Zealand's third consecutive loss, the Black Caps will in all likelihood travel for a semi-final against Australia in Manchester, with only a colossal victory to Pakistan over Bangladesh potentially keeping Kane Williamson's side out of the final four.

Appearing on TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning, Guy Heveldt broke down the somewhat dire state of the Black Caps after another defeat.

"It's hard to fathom just what's gone on isn't it?" he said.

"They were bad, there's no doubt about that. There was some bad luck absolutely, with Kane Williamson's run out, even with Martin Guptill's dismissal down the legside, Henry Nicholls choosing not to review, he would have been not out.

"There was some bad luck, but there was some very, very poor cricket - it was all kind of summed up by Ross Taylor's run out. The way that he got out just summed everything up for me. It was so, so disappointing.

"It just seems like they've forgotten how to play cricket... They were just completely outclassed."

Having now finished pool play, the Black Caps will now have some time off before a possible semi-final against Australia on July 9 at Manchester's Old Trafford.
