Should he register a score of 51 or more in tomorrow's third ODI against Bangladesh in Dunedin, Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor will cement his spot as New Zealand's all-time leading run scorer in the 50-over format.
Currently with 7957 runs to his name after 217 matches at an average of 48.22, Taylor is within touching distance of overtaking former captain Stephen Fleming, who scored 8007 runs - albeit from 279 matches.
With 20 ODI hundreds to his name, Taylor is by far the more prolific of the two in terms of runs scored, reaching three figures against the white ball more than Fleming did in his entire career. The elegant left hander reached 100 just 17 times in his time with the Black Caps in all formats.
Speaking to media today, Taylor addressed the prospect of surpassing Fleming, having made his debut under the former captain.
"If you play enough games, some of these milestones come along," Taylor joked.
"I guess it'd be nice, but hopefully there's a few runs left in me.
"Flem was someone that I looked up to as a player growing up, and when I first made the Black Caps as well."
Making his ODI debut in March 2006, Taylor has become the linchpin of the Black Caps batting order, and will in all likelihood head to his fourth Cricket World Cup in England later this year.
At the age of 34 Taylor may not have long left in the Black Caps' jersey. However, even his most vocal detractors cannot deny his status as one of the best batsmen to have ever played for New Zealand.
Taylor finished by saying that although he might become New Zealand's most prolific batsman, it'll only be a matter of time before the likes of Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill overtake him.
"My mentor, Martin Crowe, used to always say to try and get to these records, but you're just setting up for the next guy to come along and beat them.
"Hopefully, in years to come Guppy [Guptill] and Kane [Williamson] can come and beat it as well."
