Neil Wagner's five-wicket haul gives Black Caps Test and series win over Bangladesh

March 12, 2019

The Black Caps have pulled off an unlikely win at the Basin Reserve on the final day of their second Test against Bangladesh thanks to a fine morning spell from Neil Wagner and Trent Boult.

Wagner picked up five wickets this morning as the Black Caps held on to defend their first innings total of 432 declared by an innings and 12 runs.

The trio of wickets came after Boult made the first indent by dismissing Soumya Sarkar around 40 minutes into the day.

Wagner then dismissed Mohammad Mithun and Liton Das shortly after, reducing Bangladesh to 158/6 and still trailing the Black Caps by 63 runs.

Wagner then nabbed Taijul Islam with a short ball that hit the gloves and floated to silly point for an easy catch by Tom Latham.

A bright spot for the visitors came from Mohammad Mahmudullah, but it was undone shortly after when Boult nabbed his second of the morning by clean bowling Mustafizur Rahman.

It was then Wagner's turn to reclaim the spotlight as he got Mahmudullah to sky one to fine leg and he wrapped the match up two balls later by clean bowling Ebadat Hossain.

The second Test lost its first two days of action due to heavy rain in Wellington, meaning any result from the match would have to come from just three days of play.

But after the Black Caps tore through Bangladesh's batting order on the third day, veteran batsman Ross Taylor backed them up with an impressive double-century yesterday to set up today's thrilling conclusion.

The win gives the Black Caps an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test contest, meaning the Black Caps have won their fifth-straight Test series.
