West Coast gets another $400k from Government for flood recovery

May 3, 2019

Wild weather has been battering the West Coast.

Flood recovery work on the West Coast is being helped along with an extra $400,000 in Government funding.

A medium-scale adverse event has now been declared in the Westland District following the devastating March floods.

Significant March rainfall resulted in flooding, road closures and slips across the West Coast, and prompted evacuations in the Waitoto area.

The Waiho bridge at Franz Josef was washed away on March 26, cutting off State Highway Six to the south of the town, and phone and internet services to Fox Glacier. One person lost their life. The Waiho bridge has since been reinstated.

The new funding includes $200,000 from the Department of Conservation to support rubbish clean-up from the Fox River landfill and $100,000 from the Ministry for the Environment’s Contaminated Sites Remediation Fund, for river clean-up.

The Government is also making a $75,000 contribution to the Mayoral Relief Fund and $30,000 for Rural Support Trusts.
