Water restrictions will be imposed in Tauranga tomorrow for the first time in 17 years due to the hot start to summer.

The Bay of Plenty Times reports the restrictions will come into effect tomorrow at 9am, and official releases this afternoon will outlined exactly how they will affect residents.

Tauranga has had no measurable rain within the past two week, according the MetService.

Council infrastructure manager Christine Jones reportedly told a meeting today that the council had seen "unprecedented demand" for this time of year - up 25 per cent on the usual average for this time of year.
