Watch: Wellington mayor braves icy plunge for six minutes for Heart Kids Charity

October 6, 2017

Justin Lester joined a few hardy souls, sitting in a spa filled with ice for six minutes.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has taken the plunge on a mission to raise money for the Heart Kids charity.

Taking part in the annual 360 Heart Stopper challenge, Lester sat in a spa filled with ice for six minutes.

During heart surgery ice can be used in a child's chest to slow down the need for oxygen and give surgeons a longer operating time.

This is the third year he has been involved in the challenge and Lester said: "It’s fresh needless to say, but it's a beautiful day here in Wellington."

The aim of the challenge is to spread awareness and provide support for children affected by heart defects.
