Watch: Wellington gusts bring down lamp post, powerlines

Wind has weakened in the capital this afternoon following peak gusts of 126 kilometres per hour at the top of Mt Kaukau around midday.

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines said winds around the city are now "pretty standard" and have reduced to 70km/h at the top of Mt Kaukau in the last hour.

A strong wind warning for Wellington and the Wairarapa from Featherston southwards ended at 2pm.

Earlier, severe gusts brought down a lamp post at Lyall Bay and powerlines in Te Aro.

Wellington City Council contractors were called out to several addresses where trees were blocking driveways and paths, a spokesperson said.

MetService’s Angus Hines said most of the rain had passed through Wellington, with 7.2 millilitres recorded at Wellington Airport today, 10.2ml in Porirua and 12.8ml in the Hutt Valley.
