Watch: Touching moment Jacinda Ardern gives young Metallica fan tickets to Auckland gig

March 8, 2019

"We can give you credit," the Prime Minister said of William Bush’s efforts.

A surprise interview with the Prime Minister was not what Napier’s William Bush had expected.

The 13-year-old started a petition earlier last year to get metal band Metallica to perform in New Zealand, and with great success. The band has announced a one-off show in Auckland.

"We can credit you for the fact they’ve decided to add us to their world tour," Jacinda Ardern told William.

"Thank you for what you’ve done."

Ms Ardern gifted William two tickets to Metallica who are set to play at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium in  October.

She had written to William when she heard about the petition, wishing him the best of luck.

This was after William looked up several media emails and then made the decision to involve the Prime Minister who claims she was also a fan of Metallica in the 90s.

William's goal was to get the band to New Zealand with some media reporting he’d hoped to get the band to perform in Napier.

William told Ms Ardern, "that’s a bit ambitious, you know?"

"Not sure if Napier is the right location for Metallica."

The young fan was shocked to hear the tour announcement this morning after seeing his petition had died down over the past few months.

"It’s going to be awesome with Slipknot opening," he said.
