Watch: Stunning time lapse of Southern Lights captured from specially chartered Air NZ flight

March 23, 2018

A Dunedin photographer has shared a stunning time lapse of the Aurora Australis – also known as the Southern Lights – shot from a specially chartered flight last night over the Southern Ocean.

Brad Phipps posted the incredible video, which was made up of 250 shots, on Facebook.

It captures the experience of the 160 people on the second Flight to the Lights – an Air New Zealand Dreamliner that flew over the Southern Ocean to give those on-board a rare glimpse of the Aurora Australis.

The flight was scheduled to be as close to the autumn equinox, where the sun crosses the equator in its path north.

The equinox, which occurred on Wednesday morning this year, marks the start of the Aurora Australia watching season.
