Watch: Group of students teaching elders how to become tech savvy - 'I'll get there one day'

August 16, 2018

The teachers have become the students at a Taranaki school.

A group of kuia (female elders) who meet twice a week to share their knowledge, skills and experience with the Waitara community and its high school have been getting lessons of their own.

Today, the group received one-on-one training from their students to help make them a little more tech-savvy.

"I've taught her how to reply to a text, to look at a text, call someone and use a camera to look at photos," student Anika Bailey said of elder Marina Paki.

Ms Paki admitted it wasn't an easy task to get up to speed with modern-day methods of communication.

"I'll get there one day, knowing me I'll go back to the normal way," she said.

Watch how the two generations are sharing their knowledge with each other in TVNZ1's Te Karere video above.
