There are eight fire engines on the scene in Grenada North.

Firefighters are battling a large scrub fire next to a stretch of motorway in Grenada North, Wellington.

The Fire Service say there are eight appliances at the scene along with rural crews and a helicopter.

A fire spokesperson told 1 NEWS at this stage the fire appears suspicious and they're not ruling out whether it was related to a fire in a nearby area earlier today.

The fire has burnt through 300 to 400 square metres of scrub, near the suburb of Grenada Village.

Senior Station officer Owen Woodman told 1 NEWS the fire had potential to threaten houses on Jamaica Drive in Grenada Village, but that's not likely now.

However, they do have ground crews monitoring the houses.

He said his staff are likely to be here most of the night.

Police are assisting with traffic management in the area of Takapau Road, Grenada North.
