Watch: Cars begin moving as Kaikoura's main highway officially reopens

December 15, 2017

Cars, trucks and motorbikes can be seen driving through State Highway 1 in Kaikoura after it was reopened today.

Hundreds of cars, trucks and trailers are driving on State Highway 1 following the reopening of the Kaikoura road one year after the earthquake.

GoPro camera footage shows cars as they drive through the newly-reopened State Highway 1 in Kaikoura.

Residents in the small town of Ward say some motorists are already driving too fast through the area.

Earlier, motorists could be seen setting up deck chairs, eating and letting their dogs out for fresh air near Clarence as they waited in a long queue of traffic after the road's official reopening.

The November 2016 earthquake saw one million tonnes of debris dumped onto the roads in 85 slips, resulting in the closing of roads and rail links within the region.

Hundreds queued on both sides of the cordon to make the journey.
