Video: Police car left mangled after collision with fleeing vehicle in central Auckland

The crash happened about 2am just outside the city’s main police station.

A driver fleeing police in the early hours of the morning has left a police car mangled after a crash in central Auckland.

The crash happened at 1.40am outside the city's main police station.

A police spokesperson told 1 NEWS police tried to pull over a 35-year-old man driving near St Lukes. 

"The driver failed to stop and a brief pursuit was initiated before being abandoned due to safety reasons. Police continued to monitor the fleeing driver via traffic cameras."

"The driver went on to drive into the city and when turning onto Hobson Street, he crashed head on into a police car responding from the other direction."

There were no injuries, but both cars had significant damage. 

The driver was arrested and charged with failing to stop and operating a motor vehicle recklessly. He will appear in the Auckland District Court tomorrow. 

The Serious Crash Unit attended and conducted a scene examination.
