Video: Furry friends allowed to travel on Wellington public transport

April 30, 2018

Domestic pets are now allowed to ride for free on Wellington trains as long as they are in a pet carrier.

Wellington trains, ferries and buses could be a little more crowded from today as a new change comes in which sees domestic pets allowed to travel on public transport with their owners.

The revised conditions apply to Metlink rail operations today before rolling out to new bus operators as they expand into the regions.

Councils in other areas are taking note.

If travelling with an animal Metlink says it needs to be housed in a "suitable pet carrier".

The ferry service allows leashed dogs on the top deck or leashed below if raining.

Those wishing to travel with their pets on buses in the Wairarapa region will be able to do so from today, followed by those in Hutt Valley in mid-June and Kapiti, Porirua and Wellington city in mid-July 2018.

The animals will travel for free on all transport services.
