Two British nationals arrested in connection to a series of roofing scams in Auckland appeared in Whanganui District Court today facing fraud charges totalling tens of thousands of dollars.
1 NEWS understands the men are part of a wider group of British nationals police are investigating.
Police say the two men are responsible for ripping off Aucklanders in a roofing scam to the tune of nearly $25,000.
The pair, aged 27 and 30, face several charges of deception and police are not ruling out laying more.
The arrests come amidst a number of complaints from Aucklanders claiming they've been duped by dodgy roofers over the past couple of months.
Kelly Scally, the owner of roofing business Roofcare, says scammers have masqueraded as workers from his company, promising customers to complete work, but disappearing only with their money.
"We didn't know which way to look because of the phone calls that we were receiving from the public," Mr Scally told 1 NEWS.
They were even taking his company name and making fake business cards.
Mr Scally believes the group operated right across Auckland, leaving his company's reputation in tatters.
"One thing that concerned us was how big was this network," he said.
"Our reputation's been tainted and we're very, very concerned."
One man, who didn't want to be on camera, says his elderly mother lost $10,000 in the deception.
1 NEWS understands police have identified as many as 32 British nationals who've been in the country since September who may be involved in the scams - a racket that has allegedly amassed, for now, as much as $100,000.
The two men in court today have been remanded in custody until next week.
