'Such a contentious issue' - Breakfast's Hilary, Jack and Daniel debate merits of potential euthanasia referendum

December 14, 2017

Hilary Barry said she’s torn on a referendum but Jack Tame and Daniel Faitaua support the idea.

With talks of a public referendum to decide on legalising euthanasia, the debate on what box to tick has already started to heat up.

However, this morning the TVNZ1's Breakfast team couldn’t come to a unanimous decision on whether a referendum is a good idea.

The End of Life Choice Bill passed its first reading in Parliament last night, with 76 in favour and 44 against it and it will now go to a public committee.

Once the final Bill has passed, New Zealand First want a referendum on the issue, giving New Zealand a say on assisted dying.

Hilary Barry said she wonders whether it should be a binding referendum.

Jack Tame stepped in and said he thinks it should be.

"New Zealand First comes out and says 'We want a referendum' for everything," he said.

"New Zealand First would have a referendum on what meat they're going to be serving at the Christmas table."

Tame said legalising euthanasia is "such a contentious issue".

"I really think having a binding referendum makes sense."

Hillary's concerns stem from 2016's flag referendum.

"We saw how nasty it got with the flag referendum, and that was a blue flag," she said.

"This is a lot more serious, a lot more personal for some people and I just don't want it to get nasty and you know it will."

Daniel agreed with Jack that it was a contentious topic.

"I believe it should be put out to the public, I think we should decide once and for all whether this Bill should be something."

"Everyone has a view on it, I have a view on it, you have a view on it."

Hilary said she is "torn".

"I see all the comments coming in already and I see the argument from both sides,

"I really don't know where I stand, such a tough issue."
