Road Safety expert says more needs to be spent on educating drivers, as Government plows $1.4 billion into road safety

Road Safety Education’s Maria Lovelock says the spending is a good start, but helping people avoid making mistakes in the first place would be of benefit.

Over the next three years the Government will spend $1.4 billion to improve New Zealand's roads, with 870km of safety improvements.

The Government says it will prevent 160 deaths and serious injuries on our roads every year.

Road Safety Education's Maria Lovelock told TVNZ's Breakfast the Government are addressing safer roads, roadsides and speed with this policy which she says is a great start.

"You are going to see an increase of shoulders especially on rural roads, median barriers and dividers down the middle of roads.

"Anything that is going to allow people more time to recover from perhaps a mistake and to give them a bit more time to get out of a situation is a good use of money.”

She still thinks more could be done to educate drivers, however.

“I think we also need to look at education, where we are coming from is we’d rather people didn’t make the mistake in the first place.”

She says people need to also take responsibility for their driving.

“There is definitely a complacency when we are out on the roads, 99 per cent of the time we don’t have a problem and therefore we can get very complacent, we do need to see driving as a serious and responsible thing that we are doing and be a lot more focused.

“It is quite a risky thing that we do everyday but we just forget it is a risk.”
