A reported vegetation fire in Te Anau turned out to be a smoky haze that had travelled across the Tasman Sea and from bushfires in Tasmania.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1 NEWS firefighters received reports this morning of the vegetation fire.

Crews were sent out to locate the "fire", which was reportedly coming from somewhere between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

After having no luck locating the reported fire on the ground, a helicopter was tasked with flying over the area to try and find where it was coming from.

The crew on board the chopper could see a smoky haze but could still not work out where it was coming from.

It was later determined the smoky haze originating in Tasmania with the spokesperson saying it was not completely uncommon for smoke to travel that sort of distance.

The ABC in Australia has reported “relentless, out-of-control bushfires” are burning across Tasmania with no reprieve in sight with five emergency warnings in place across the state.

One blaze has burned through 40,000 hectares.
