Roadworks haven't hampered this year's Kaikoura Cup, with thousands turning up to place a punt almost one year after earthquakes devastated the region.

The scorching Kaikoura day played host to more than 5000 punters from around the country, who were not deterred by the trickier than usual route in.

"It's packed it usually is it's been that way for the last seven or eight years just seems to be one of those days that everybody seems to come here," Kaikoura Trotting Club President William Weavers said.

The big race of the day, the Kaikoura Cup, was taken out by crowd favourite Lazarus, nabbing a $50,000 prize pool.

But at the end of the day, picking a winner is not as important as supporting the local community through the racing event.

As they face the quake anniversary in two weeks time this year’s Kaikoura Cup is a triumph in and of itself.
