Police recruits to be trained in Auckland for first time ever

Shaun Robinson says it'll be good for New Zealanders to have new recruits with a good understanding of mental health issues.

Police recruits will for the first time ever be trained in Auckland, beginning next week.

A group of 20 recruits will be trained in Tāmaki Makaurau starting Monday, April 30.

The in-house learning will take place at the Unitec campus in Mt Albert and the field training component will be based from the North Shore Policing Centre.

Police said in a statement today the Auckland recruits will receive identical training as they would at the Royal New Zealand Police College located in Poriura, Wellington.

Inspector Iain Saunders of the said this pilot came about following direct feedback from potential recruits, many who said moving to Wellington for 16 weeks was a real barrier to joining NZ Police, particularly those with young children.

"With our recent recruitment drive to get more people to sign up, we are really keen to see if this initiative can assist us in increasing our numbers by reducing some of the barriers preventing those who would make excellent Police officers from joining up," Inspector Saunders said.

The recruit training course involves tactical training, driving, firearms, and defensive tactics.
