A 25-year-old man has been arrested over the theft of a ute and burning death of two dogs which were inside a crate on the back tray.

Thieves stole a white Toyota Hilux from a property on Awaroa Road in Broadwood, southeast of Kaitaia, on Friday night, the Northern Advocate reported.

Malcolm Scrivener told the Advocate that the thieves had broken into his sons' property - Chad and Theo - and taken the ute before crashing into a nearby paddock.

Police said the man's family had brought the arrested man in to Kaitaia Police Station.

He is facing charges of arson and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, as well as cruelty to an animal.

He is due to appear at Kaitaia District Court today.
