A person is in a critical condition after being hit by a train in Christchurch.

Two ambulances were called to Colombo St, between Carlyle St and Moorhouse Ave at about 10.10am, today.

Police say the victim in thought to be a man aged in his early forties.

The pedestrian has been taken to Christchurch Hospital.
