A 40-year-old woman was killed in a crash as she was walking on State Highway One south of Christchurch last night.
The crash happened at around 11.30pm on the highway, between Sharlands Road and Sheats Road, south of Dunsandel, Inspector Peter Cooper, Canterbury Rural Area Commander, said this afternoon.
The driver of the car involved is assisting police with ongoing inquiries, Mr Cooper said in a statement.
Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and noticed the woman walking on the highway, he said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact their local police station.
