New Year's Eve fireworks blamed for spectacular Port Waikato scrub fire

New Year's Eve fireworks are believed to have started a scrub fire at Port Waikato overnight.

Eight fire crews turned out to fight the fire near the Sunset Life Saving Club when the alarm was raised at about 12.03am.

Fire and Emergency NZ told 1 NEWS properties were threatened by the fire, but were undamaged.

Onlookers watched from a distance as flames lept into the air behind homes, amid a plume of smoke.

The fire was extinguished and no one was injured.
